hey!
despite my research of this school, I'm not so sure about its environmental program. does anyone know something I don't, maybe as a legacy or just because you know a lot about Harvard? I think it's a great enviro programa nd I applied because I like their English program (I want to minor enviro cuz I like enviro studies and I want to become an op ed writer for enviro issues), but just not so sure what stands out about Harvard enviro.. for example, Penn has their famous biopond, while Yale has a summer program devoted to it (I participated). Any thoughts?
sorry for bad grammar and texting language- I'm rushing! :P

Pre-interview questionnaire - did anyone else get this?
I have recently scheduled a Harvard alumni interview, and received a PDF of "Harvard Interview Questionnaire" that the interviewer recommended I fill out before the interview. The questionnaire asks things about my academic interests, academic honors, ECs, languages, athletics, summers, favorite books, standardized test scores, etc. The document has a Harvard Alumni Club logo on top, so I don't think it is unique to my interviewer. I wanted to ask if anybody else has had to fill out a pre-interview questionnaire for Harvard, and if so, how long/elaborate their responses were? Should I answer these as if they were just some other college supplemental questions, or more casually? Thanks!!

Looking for a Summer Roommate(s) (female)
Hey everyone. I know it's a little early but I'm looking for a female roommate who is interested in living in Boston over the summer (for summer school, research, internship etc.). If anyone's interested, we can look for an apartment, preferably close to Harvard/MIT. I don't really have any preferences besides having my own room.
PM me or reply to this thread if interested :)

Chances for Harvard SCEA- the wait begins...
I think I'm a pretty accurate evaluator of my own chances, but maybe not. What do you guys think? I'm worried about my supplement and the fact that I could be viewed as a "standard strong" applicant.

SAT II: Biology M 800, Literature 800

Junior year I took more AP classes than anyone I knew and some of them were kind of a joke. I didn't want to take many AP classes senior year because I love the community college where I take classes and the value of a class is really important to me.

Essays (rating 1-10, details): I loved my common app essay. But to be honest, it was completed at the last minute. If anyone wants to read it, I would love to PM it!
My supplement was a reflection on the USSYP listed above. It was reused from another application. I'm worried about it. It doesn't detract, but it probably doesn't add.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: 10/10.
Teacher Rec #2: 10/10.
Counselor Rec: 9.5/10. Counselors at my school turn over fairly quickly, so I’ve only known her for a year or so. She really likes me and knows how motivated I am.
Additional Rec: 9/10. Really positive, but more of a list of stuff I’ve done than my qualities. It’s more the style of the rec than the content I’m iffy about.
Interview: Haven't had it yet
Other
Applied for Financial Aid?: No
Intended Major: Double major in political science and who knows what else :)
State (if domestic applicant): Midwest state that doesn't send many students to Harvard
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: High
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None

Harvard vs SYPM
Is Harvard a lot harder to get into than SYPM? The acceptance rates seem more or less the same, but I'm wondering if Harvard's applicant pool is more competitive due to its brand name.

Should I list my ethnicity as Asian or other in the CommonApp?
Thanks,

Extraordinary enough to get into Harvard?
Hi- I feel I have a rather unique story with extraordinary elements. I have 35 ACT but poor grades (3.4 unw 4.4 w) due to a severe life threatening illness which affected 2 years of school and dropped me from a 3.8unw/4.8w.
Big stand out on my app besides the usual, like president of a few school clubs, is my extracuirrs-- I was wondering if these would be considered "extraordinary":
-created nonprofit for which I fundraised 10s of thousands of dollars + thousands of volunteers in over 8 states that is related to my major and a very good cause, state awarded me for it
-created a LLC (Company) which got over $10,000 from investors I pitched, and increased our evaluation 4x the original $10,000
-few other "companies" as well in which I got some thousands of dollars but minor neighborhood things
Also some personal things like self teaching languages, well traveled + study abroad programs, proficiency in instrument, etc.
Is this extraordinary enough for Harvard?
thanks,
Joe

HES admissions are risky.
I live in Cambridge and I am looking to further my education. I currently have a full-time job and most masters programs would require me to quit my job in order to study. I stumbled upon Harvard Extension School and it seems like a perfect fit. I could get a masters degree in software engineering and keep my job because the classes are at night. I would also get some awesome perks like access to Harvard libraries, museums, and lectures. All of which I could take full advantage of since I live about 15 minutes away from the Harvard campus. However, I guess this comes at a cost. While looking at the admissions requirements, I noticed that you need to complete 3 classes before you can even apply. And these classes cost $2,550 each. This means that I would have to spend over $7,500 before I can apply and even after I complete the three courses there is no guarantee that I will be admitted into the degree program. So, in theory, I could be flushing $7,500 down the drain. I already have student loans from my undergrad that I need to pay off and I am not looking to take on more student debt, especially when there is no guarantee that I will get a degree. My job is willing to pay for the tuition but they need an acceptance letter first. This honestly seems like a ripoff from a university with a $40 billion endowment. I mean, I thought $75 was an expensive application fee but this is absurd. Is there something that I'm missing here?
Thanks.

What are my chances?
I posted this a while ago in a different thread, but I feel that the people reading this thread might be more cynical and could help bring me to face reality.
In all seriousness, what's a rough estimate of my chance of admission to Harvard? My application was geared towards physics.
GPA: 4.02 weighted (my school doesn't record unweighted)
Rank: 1/160
ACT: 34 (33 Math, 33 Writing, 33 Reading, 36 Science)
Sat II: 800 Math II, 760 Physics
AP's: I've taken 5 tests and gotten a 5 on all except one which was a 4, and I'm taking 4 more courses this year for a total of 9/10 that my school offers. One, Chemistry, was an independent study.
College Courses: I've taken courses in Science Research at SUNY Albany and in Precalculus, Calculus II, and Calculus III at Ulster County Community College.
Ec's and Awards:
Coca Cola Semifinalist (finalists aren't out yet), NMSQT Letter of Commendation, AP Scholar with Distinction, RPI Medalist (not sure how relevant this one is), Scholastic Art and Writing Honorable Mention, Scholar Athlete all 4 years, blah blah...
I participated in varsity track and cross country since 8th grade, and I've been to states 4 times. Also a team captain in both.
I've been a student in Isshin Ryu karate for 10 years. I'm currently a black belt and have placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in local competitions. I also volunteer for the dojo.
I'm a student member of the Board of Education and am currently on a committee to reform the guidance program.
I founded the Human Rights Club, which goes on field trips to amnesty-type events and raises awareness. I'm president of the Tech Club, and I learned to code on my own and made several video games which I presented to the school and during some of my interviews.
I write and edit for the school newspaper. I have a science column.
For three years I've helped freshmen integrate into high school by meeting with them every week for a year.
I'm an officer for NHS and I'm in charge of the school's tutoring system (I recently made the process paperless). Also lots of volunteering through this.
I've been a stage manager and sound engineer for the school play for three years.
There are a bunch of other things too, like Math Team and Science Olympiad, that aren't as relevant.
I conducted research in quantum optics with a researcher from Harvard for two years, and I wrote a paper and am registered to participate in the ISEF-qualifying competition near me. I submitted my paper/abstract to Harvard.
In addition to what I thought were good letters of rec from my teachers and guidance counselor, I also got letters from the Harvard researcher, my district's superintendent (because we're both on the board and I've worked with him) and from my cross country coach.
I wrote my Harvard supplement about how working at Harvard allowed me to think and learn at a higher level, and how it made me realize what I wanted to do with my life. I also had to spend a couple months self-learning quantum mechanics, multivariable calculus, and electromagnetism so that I'd be able to understand what I was doing. I wrote about that as well.
Honestly, my primary concern is that I don't have great awards. How detrimental might this be on my apps?

Going to Prep/Boarding School
Hi everyone! I know this may be an annoying question, but does anyone know how much going to a preparatory boarding school like Exeter/Andover/Deerfield help with getting into an Ivy League school? I know they have a higher matriculation rate, but will it actually help you get in?

As a white person with no learning/physical disability, what is your opinion of Affirmative Action?
I am a minority with a disability yet I feel guilty that I have a little bit higher chance of getting in than those who I believe have more achievements than me.

Deferred Harvard EA
I was deferred EA at Harvard. I recognize that my chances are slim in the regular, but what can I do to improve my odds? I already sent a letter to the Admissions Office.

Huge donation from someone at my school; how will this affect my admission?
So someone at my school's family donated over $40 million to Harvard a few years ago (built a couple buildings in their name). He got in, but he's far less qualified than I am. Will Harvard look more favorably on my application, to try to hide what was clearly a developmental admit? We're the only 2 that applied. Thanks!
↧
Being an URM
Hey all,
I was recently introduced into the roles of being an URM in the college admissions process. My question is, how much does it realistically help in the admission? Also, does having a "sad" life story plus being an URM help a lot? Lastly, does a North African Arab student qualify as one? I'm not trying to use it as a free ride in, of course, but I'm just curious of the realistic effects.
Thank you!

Interview ranking
I've read through some posts that Yale and Harvard interviewers rank the individual on a scale (yale 1-9) (Harvard 1-6). Do other ivy's do this as well? This is the first time I have seen it. Also what impact would a great rank by an interviewer do to your application. I assume not that much. Thanks in advance
