My uncle has multiple(although not undergrad) degrees from Harvard and both he and my aunt work are current faculty members of a Harvard graduate school. Will that give any tipping factor? Does Harvard ever consider anything other than parents or grandparents legacy? or are they too distant a relation to have any effect on my chances.

I am a 2-year varsity soccer athlete, and I was wondering if Harvard or any Ivy in general lets you just walk on and try out for the team? Thanks

Harvard Supplementary Essay
Harvard just came out with their supplementary essay today. For the common app essay, my son wrote about a unique experience of communicating his violin performance to someone and how this experience has changed his outlook on his future performances and what his talent in violin is really for. The question I have is: for the supplementary essay, is it better to write about his passion for violin performance (but very different from what he wrote in his common app essay) to be consistent with his most important activity in his life, or would it be better to write about something entirely different to display another side of him? He intends to major in music.

Enjoyed high school, but now need advice on my limited ECs
My ECs:
-babysitter for my younger siblings (9, 10, 11, 12) (15-20 hr/wk)
-math tutor for students with and without learning disabilities (9, 10, 11, 12) (3 hr/wk)
-hospital volunteer (11, 12) (8 hr/wk)
-religious youth group leader (12) (5 hr/wk) - conduct meetings, teach lessons, plan recreational and service projects
-volunteer camp counselor (11, 12) (70 hr/wk, 1 wk/yr)
-club where we spend lunch with the Special Ed students (9, 10)
-school choir (9, 10, 11, 12)
-track and field (9, 10) - won't be putting this...
I did more service throughout high school (additional 50 hours), especially through my church, but I don't have a way of describing that effectively.
So, I know for universities like Harvard ECs are pretty darn important. I see a lot of stuff about doing what you love and running with it, which I totally agree with.
Personally, I didn't really have any sort of high achieving mindset concerning ECs for most of high school. Mostly because I didn't feel "superior" at something like a lot of my incredible classmates. Yet, looking back, I loved everything I did... I just didn't start a business or run a charity or do competitions or internships or research. I didn't go about high school thinking "what would colleges want me to do?" I just lived my life the best I could.
I just don't know how to present myself to colleges like Harvard where my chances are so slim. I felt my activites were meaningful, but maybe not to admissions.
Based on the small list I made, what order would you rank my ECs and which would you not include? Of course, you can be honest and say I have almost no chance and I'd would agree, but I think I'll still try :)

Do transfers ever come from Harvard's peers?
I know the top schools (HYPS) use the transfer process to add nontraditional students to the class, rather than as a second shot at admissions for qualified applicants that got rejected. Does anyone know, either anecdotally through connections/experience or through online data that I can't find, how many Harvard transfers come from peer institutions? (Let's say top 30 just to add parameters). I am going to school with full intention of loving it, but in the unlikely event that it's not a great fit and I decide to apply for a transfer, I'm trying to gauge how viable Harvard would be from a top 15 university. I know it's only 2% accepted so that's why I want to clarify if it's literally 0.00001% for top tier school students.
Thanks!
Also, is it better, generally, to apply after freshman or sophomore year for transfer? Is there a preference?

What should my essay be about and what should it's structure be? Applicant class of 2021.
If some one could please shed some light as to how to appeal to the admissions officers, are we supposed to play with their heart strings? Or should we try to make them laugh? How do we make them show some affection to our essay and thus to us? What topics should I appeal to?
Any information is really appreciated, with the application process being more cutthroat than ever.

Harvard Visiting Student - Experience?
Hey guys,
I am a business student from Sweden and in one year I would like to spent one semester abroad and I am currently looking for "Free Mover" opportunities at good universities. I just saw that Harvard offers the opportunity to spent one semester there and study. I am aware of the costs, but let's not talk about this right now.
I was just wondering if anyone has experience with this program like required GPA or rate of acceptance?
As someone with no experience with "rate my chances" I can just post what I have done so far:
I study business administration and management in Sweden
I think my GPA is about 3.5 (it is a little difficult to compare swedish grades to the US grades, but comparing a few online tools the GPA should be around 3.5)
Member of 2 student initiatives
Co-founder of a small start-up
unsalaried tutor for children in low-income families
Internship at KPMG right now and at PwC after Christmas
LSE Summer School Course with A- finished.
Thanks for your help, time and experince :)

Can somebody clarify the Canada Program at Harvard please?
http://wcfia.harvard.edu/programs/canada
Is it a program where current Harvard students are interested in courses revolving around Canada (its history, politics and government and contemporary society)?
Is it a good idea to study Canadian politics and government at Harvard? Does Harvard offer it? If I study politics and government at Harvard, is it only useful for American politics and government?
Thank you!

Harvard's NPC ?
Harvard's NPC is super simple, it didn't ask anything about our assets. And the predicted EFC is much lower than other top schools. Is their actual FA calculation truly this simple?

essay=writer's block// question about a club in harvard
excuse informal language//bad grammar, multitasking.
so I'm applying to Ivies soon. and i have to write something im passionate about: music.
should i put the fact i created an (private) orchestra when i was a freshman bc my school's orchestra was underfunded and didn't even have a music teacher. (people fooled around in that class instead of playing music and school didn't care)
we've been accepted to small concert halls and our members is around 180~ as for the moment.
or I'm a violin/flute tutor at school for two years --- i'm concertmaster at school orchestra now (attempting to reform my school's orchestra, we got a new teacher last year)
or im also in another orchestra touring austria soon.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
im not 100% sure i would want to write about music bc my major is biomedical engineering ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

edit: I also like dancing. If I get accepted, would you think Asian American Dance Troupe would be a good idea?
thanks!

Compelling Reason to Transfer
I had posted about transferring a few weeks back and @gibby gave me some really good advice that I've taken into consideration.
I just had one question about a "compelling reason to transfer": Does this reason need to be academic?
My reason for asking is that my younger brother is attending a boarding school in New England (2 hours from Boston). My parents and older sister are not US Citizens and must return to their birth nation due to issues with their visas. They are not sure when they can return as they are also taking care of my grandmother, who is quite ill.
My brother and I, on the other hand, are both US Citizens. Is it a compelling enough reason for me to transfer because I want to be closer to my brother? For reference, I am currently at UC Berkeley w/ GPA of 3.5 (I have only completed two classes so far).
Thanks in advance.

Harvard University versus University of Chicago
Hi everyone!
Though it still seems a bit surreal, I was accepted into Harvard (SCEA) and University of Chicago (RD). I don't want to give the "woe is me" impression, nor do I want to brag by writing this; I just am really conflicted as to where I should go come fall. I know there isn't a bad choice here by any stretch of the imagination, but I was hoping you all might be able to help shed some light on each school. There are so many differences, and yet they also have so many similarities. I was hoping anything you had to share about each school might help me at least start to further differentiate the two of them and to start making some progress on a decision.
I'm really interested in studying Linguistics and Near Eastern Studies (Cuneiform and Semitics), and both schools have stellar departments. If you do have anything to say about either, though, I would really appreciate it! I am also really interested in the social life at the schools, and I really hope to find social outlets that don't involve alcohol or excessive partying (not that I am opposed to partying every once in a while ;))) .
Thanks so much for any help, guys. CC helped me to get through this hectic year and all of the applications, and I'm hoping you all can help me one last time! Thanks, again!

Mixed Race In College Admissions
I am half Caucasian (arab), and African . I know that AA and other under represented minorities are more likely to get accepted than Asians or Caucasians, but if I just select African/African American instead of white and black, I would be denying one half of my heritage. Which box should I select?

Eligibility concern
Hi,
I took an exit exam to complete high school upon the end of my junior year. I immediately started at a two year institution (so instead of senior year I was at a 2 year college)...
I'm starting my 5th semester now, wanting to apply for transfer... but would I be ineligible? Haven't taken upper division courses (obviously)
thanks

TOEFL for Harvard
I am an international rising senior applying to harvard this fall. On their website, they say that "Students are not required to submit the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) unless the SAT exams are not available in their current location." Does this mean that if I send my SAT scores, which are as good as they should be for the university, I will be exempted from sending the TOEFL one? I am asking because I can't take the test until October 29th where I live, so my scores won't be received until around November 20th if sent.
